19th century fashion and why we stopped wearing hats
Some time ago I came across Karolina Żebrowska’s videos on tumblr. She has a YouTube channel dedicated to vintage clothes where she explains various aspects of fashion history in a humorous, easy to understand way.
Having read up a little on the 19th century fashion, I had already been able to distinguish between some traits of early-, mid-, and late-19th century clothes in period films, but Karolina’s video was very instructive.
2. Victorian Men’s Fashion History and Clothing Guide
Returning to Karolina’s videos, I also enjoyed her latest one musing on why hats stopped being a ubiquitous item of clothing they used to be. As a southerner I often wondered about that since the sun is pretty aggressive from May through September in the place I live.
Having read up a little on the 19th century fashion, I had already been able to distinguish between some traits of early-, mid-, and late-19th century clothes in period films, but Karolina’s video was very instructive.
It really helped to see all the differences in progress and how some trends changed and influenced each other throughout the years. The video is about women’s fashion only, and I wish there was a video of comprehensive 19th century men’s fashion. The closest I could find were these two articles:
