Basically same. I think both Mycroft and Sherlock had some inheritance from their parents which was enough to pay for their education. Until Sherlock was of age, Mycroft, being seven years senior, was his legal guardian and keeper of Sherlock’s share.
Once Sherlock decided to leave university, Mycroft was not amused, but the money which would have been used to pay for the other two years in the university was saved and instead helped Sherlock to get started in London once he came into inheritance. I dream of writing a fic about it one day :)
